Madison Heights is a suburb of Washington, D.C., located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. Madison Heights is bordered by Largo to the north and west, Suitland to the east and south, and Upper Marlboro to the southwest.
The land that would become Madison Heights was first surveyed in 1792 by General George Washington as part of his land holdings in what would become Northern Virginia. The area was originally known as " Washington's Woods" after the president who had surveyed it. In 1814, James Buchanan purchased 1,000 acres of this land for $10,000 from General Washington's grandson Lawrence Lewis. Buchanan named his estate "Marlborough" after his home country England.
In 1837 John Riggs acquired 500 acres of Marlborough for $5,000 and began developing it into a plantation style estate called "Riggs Hill". The Riggs family owned Madison Heights until 1978 when it was sold to developer Harry Fainberg who subdivided it into smaller lots and built single-family homes beginning in 1979.
Today Madison Heights is a suburban community with many well-maintained homes on large lots with mature trees and gardens. It has excellent schools (including two private schools), shopping areas (including an outlet mall), recreational facilities (including a golf course), and convenient access to both Washington D.C., Baltimore City/MD suburbs (Largo/Towson) as well as Prince George's County suburbs (Suitland/Upper Marlboro).
