Orkney Springs, VA

Orkney Springs is a small town located in Giles County, Virginia. The population of Orkney Springs was 1,814 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Harrisonburg, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The town was founded in 1816 by James and John Orr. The first house in Orkney Springs was built by James Orr and his wife Margaret on land that he had purchased from John Buchanan. In 1817, James Orr built a store on Main Street which served as the town's main business center until it burned down in 1894.

In 1818, William Auld purchased land from James and John Orr and began farming it. Auld was one of the town's early pioneers and served as its first postmaster. He also operated a sawmill and gristmill which were important economic engines for the community.

Orkney Springs experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s due to its proximity to coal mines near Harrisonburg. This growth led to increased demand for housing which resulted in the construction of several large homes which are still standing today including The Grange (built in 1888), The Lodge (built in 1889), and The Manor (built in 1896).

During World War II, many residents enlisted in the military and left their homes behind to serve their country. As a result, many homes were left vacant for years after the war ended which allowed new home construction to take place on previously abandoned lots. This period of rapid growth is often referred to as "The Golden Age" of Orkney Springs due to its beautiful architecture which can be seen throughout the town including at The Manor, The Lodge, and The Grange.

Today, there is still much activity going on within Orkney Springs thanks largely to its strong economy which has been bolstered by both local businesses and tourism industry activities such as wineries located nearby such as Stony Ridge Vineyards & Winery & Black Diamond Vineyards & Winery . These businesses have helped create jobs for residents while also generating revenue that has been used to improve infrastructure within the community such as new sidewalks & streetlights , recreation facilities , & parks .
