The Civil War caused great damage to Richmond. Over 60% of the city was destroyed by Union troops during their three-month occupation from April through July 1865. Today, Richmond continues to be an important economic center within Virginia. The city has a strong industrial base (including pharmaceuticals and aerospace) as well as a growing information technology sector. In addition, tourism is a significant part of the local economy; visitors come to see historical sites like Monument Avenue (home to many prominent buildings), Byrd Park (a large urban park), and Shockoe Bottom (the historic district associated with slave trade).
