The Changing Face of South Boston: A Case Study in Home Price Trends

South Boston is a neighborhood in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. The neighborhood is bordered by Dorchester to the north, Roxbury to the east, Mattapan to the south, and Hyde Park to the west. The population was 34,824 at the 2010 census.

The area that would become South Boston was first settled in 1630 as part of Dorchester. In 1638, English Puritan colonists from Charlestown founded what would become known as Dorchester Village on a tract of land along the Neponset River. The village consisted of a few dozen homes and a church; it remained small and insignificant for more than two centuries.

In 1809, South Boston began to grow rapidly as waves of Irish immigrants arrived in search of work in the burgeoning textile industry. By 1860, South Boston had emerged as one of Boston's most populous neighborhoods; it had reached its peak population of over 50,000 residents. However, by 1900 South Boston's population had decreased significantly due to increased migration into newer neighborhoods such as Brighton and Eastie and competition from new development projects in downtown Boston.

Today, South Boston remains one of downtown Boston's most ethnically diverse neighborhoods; it is home to a large number of Portuguese immigrants as well as African Americans and Latinos from throughout Greater New England. Despite this diversity, South Boston has managed to maintain its characteristically gritty feel; many longtime residents refer to it simply as "the hood."

South Boston is home to several important historical sites including King Philip's War Memorial (a monument commemorating colonial soldiers who fought against Native Americans), John F Kennedy Presidential Library (which occupies part of JFK Stadium), and Paul Revere House (which served as George Washington's headquarters during the American Revolution).

The neighborhood is also home to several popular businesses including Dunkin' Donuts , Starbucks ,and Baskin-Robbins . Several high-rise apartment buildings have been built in recent years; these developments have helped revitalize much of South Boston while also increasing housing prices within reach for many middle-class families
