The town of Tazewell was founded in 1785 by James and Elizabeth (Powell) Tazewell on land that they had purchased from the Cherokee Nation. The first settler in what would become Tazewell was John Powell, who arrived in 1784. The town's name is derived from the Cherokee word "taza" meaning "a small stream".
