Bellevue was first settled in 1869 by Charles W. Mercer and his family. Mercer had purchased land from the federal government for $10 per acre, which at that time was considered a very cheap price. By 1970, Bellevue had become one of the largest cities in Washington state with a population of over 50,000 people.
