The post became an important stop on the Oregon Trail and played an important role in trade between British Columbia and Oregon Territory.
In 1881, a railroad line was built through Hansville connecting Seattle with Portland. This helped spur development in the town and led to increased logging and mining activity in the area. In 1916, a fire destroyed much of downtown Hansville but it was quickly rebuilt thanks to donations from local businesses and residents.
The town's economy shifted from logging to agriculture after World War II when demand for fruits and vegetables increased due to population growth nationwide. Today, agriculture remains an important part of Hansville's economy with crops grown both commercially and for subsistence purposes by local farmers. Forestry has also been an important part of the local economy since early settlement with lumber being harvested from nearby forests for use locally or exported overseas .
