Centuria is a small town located in the northeast corner of Waukesha County, Wisconsin. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Centuria is located on U.S. Highway 45, about 10 miles north of Waukesha and 20 miles south of Milwaukee.
Centuria was first settled in 1836 by John and Elizabeth (Dunn) Kuehnle who built a sawmill on the banks of the Fox River. The community was named for Centuria, Italy, where one of the Kuehnle's ancestors had lived. A post office was established at Centuria in 1851 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1957.
The town's economy has been based largely on agriculture and manufacturing since its inception; however, over time Centuria has developed into a small commercial center with several businesses providing services to residents and tourists alike. The largest employer in Centuria is Stryker Corporation which manufactures medical devices. Other major employers include JBS USA, Inc., an animal feed manufacturer; Diversey Foods Corporation, a producer of frozen foods; and United States Gypsum Company which produces gypsum board products used for wallboard construction and other applications.
The majority of housing stock in Centuria consists of single-family homes which were built between 1940 and 1970; however there are also a few duplexes and apartments available for rent or purchase.
