Verona is a small town located in Walworth County, Wisconsin. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Verona is located on U.S. Highway 14 and is bordered by the towns of Janesville to the north and west, Beloit to the east, and Rockford to the south.
The first Europeans to visit what would become Verona were members of an expedition led by French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1673. The town was founded in 1853 by Jesse Burt, who named it for his home city of Venice, Italy. Verona initially grew as a center for agriculture and manufacturing; however, during the late 20th century it experienced a resurgence as a bedroom community for Milwaukeeans seeking suburban living without having to commute into downtown Milwaukee. Today Verona continues to be an agricultural community with a small industrial base; however, its major economic engines are tourism and retail sales related to its proximity to Milwaukee's attractions (including Miller Park).
