The first settlers arrived in White Lake in 1853. The town was founded by Dr. John A. Harsdorf and his wife, Elizabeth (Baker) Harsdorf. They named the town after their home in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Early businesses included a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a sawmill.
