Woodruff, WI

Woodruff is a small town located in Dane County, Wisconsin. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. Woodruff is known for its scenic beauty and its close proximity to Madison, the state capital.

The town of Woodruff was first settled in 1837 by members of the New England Emigration Society. The society was formed to bring religious refugees from England to what is now Wisconsin. The town's name honors General James G. Woodruff, who served in the Mexican-American War and in the American Civil War.

Today, Woodruff is a quiet community with a rich history. The downtown area features several historic buildings, including the old post office and general store (now occupied by a coffee shop), as well as the Masonic lodge and Odd Fellows hall (both built in 1892). There are also several churches - including an Episcopal church (built in 1886) and a Presbyterian church (built in 1889) - as well as a public library (established in 1895).

The main economic drivers of Woodruff today are tourism and agriculture. The town is home to several wineries - including Winemaker's Ridge Vineyards & Winery (established in 1984), Fox Run Vineyards & Winery (established in 1988), and Stone Hill Vineyards & Winery (established in 1990) - as well as two cheese factories: Heritage Cheese Company (established in 1978) and Kettle Moraine Cheese Company (established in 1985). Additionally, there are several bed-and-breakfasts located within the town limits, as well as a number of small businesses that cater to tourists visiting Madison or other nearby towns.
