Tuscola, Michigan

Tuscola is a county located in the Thumb region of the U.S. state of Michigan. The county seat is Caro. The county was established in 1840 and its name is derived from the Ojibwa word meaning "open door" or "entrance." The county has a total area of 726 square miles, of which 724 square miles is land and 2.1 square miles (0.3%) is water.

As of the 2010 census, the population was 55,729, making it the fifth-most populous county in Michigan. The median income for a household in the county was $42,180 and the median income for a family was $50,098. Males had a median income of $41,711 versus $28,991 for females. The per capita income for the county was $20,078. About 11% of families and 14% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20% of those under age 18 and 8% of those age 65 or over
