Pondera is a town in and the county seat of Pondera County, Montana, United States. The population was 1,153 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Great Falls, Montana Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Pondera was founded in 1883 as a railroad town by the Great Northern Railway. The town was named for nearby Pondera Lake. The lake itself was named for early explorer and trapper Pierre Choteau, Jr., whose nickname was "Pondereaux", meaning "fat one" in French.
The first post office in Pondera opened in 1884.
