Ponce is a municipality on the southern coast of Puerto Rico, located in the northeastern corner of the island. The city is also the seat of the administrative region known as Ponce Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Ponce Municipio and has a population of nearly half a million people.

The municipality has a land area of 151 square miles (392 km2) and a population of 159,458 as of the 2010 census. Ponce is commonly known by its nicknames La Perla del Sur (The Pearl of the South), La Ciudad Señorial (The Noble City), and La Ciudad de las Quenepas (Genip City).

Ponce was founded on August 12, 1692, by Juan Ponce de León y Loayza, the great-grandson of Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León. It is named for Juan Ponce de León y Loayza, the great-grandson of Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León. He served as mayor four times: from 1790 to 1793; from 1812 to 1813; from 1816 to 1817; and from 1820 to 1823. The city houses numerous public parks including one within walking distance from downtown called Parque de Bombas which was built in honor of firefighters who lost their lives during an1883 fire that burned much of the city center down. The park contains an old firehouse that now serves as a museum dedicated to those firefighters as well as other memorabilia related to fires and firefighting in Puerto Rico's history. Other notable parks include Parque Bartolomé Masó which contains an amphitheater used for concerts and events; Parque Eugenio María de Hostos which offers panoramic views of downtown Ponce; and Reserva Natural Laguna Cartagena which is a nature reserve with hiking trails and bird watching opportunities.
