This means that more than one third or $700 billion worth of homes are now owned outright or have mortgages that are less than 20% equity! In addition to this there are another $1 trillion dollars worth of homes that are considered “underwater” meaning their mortgage balance exceeds their home’s market value! So not only do we have more homeowners than ever before but also more people who are able to borrow against their homes without having too much equity invested!
