Norristown is a borough in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 18,711 at the 2010 census. Norristown is part of the Norristown-South Norriton School District.
Norristown began as a small farming community in the early 18th century. In 1740, George Washington passed through on his way to Philadelphia and stayed in the home of James Logan near what is now the intersection of King and Green Streets. In 1753, William Penn granted a tract of land to John Dickinson which included present-day Norristown. The town grew slowly due to its location between Philadelphia and Lancaster and its lack of water resources until after the American Revolution when it became an important transportation hub for goods heading westward.
In 1819, Samuel Norris built one of the first mills in Norristown on Mill Creek near what is now Norris Square. The mill became an important part of the local economy and by 1840 there were six mills operating in Norristown. By 1860 there were twenty-one mills operating in Norristown alone; many were powered by water from Mill Creek or other local streams. The textile industry began to decline after World War I but remained an important part of the local economy until after World War II when it was replaced by more modern industries such as plastics and electronics manufacturing.
Today, much of what makes Norristown unique remains: its history, its architecture (including several historic mill buildings), and its close proximity to both Philadelphia and Lancaster (just thirty minutes away). However, one significant change has been that since 2000 there has been a large influx of young families into Norristown due to its excellent schools (especially those located within walking distance from their homes). This has led to rising home prices and increased demand for housing stock; however, it has also led to some tension between longtime residents who want stricter zoning laws limiting new development (in order to preserve character) and newcomers who see increased property values as a sign that their community is growing up fast - something they are happy about!
