The town's name comes from Colonel Harden's military camp near the present-day intersection of U.S. Highway 31 and Alabama State Route 231. In 1835, Camp Hill became the county seat of Baldwin County after a dispute with neighboring Fairhope over which community should have that honor ended in a duel between the two mayors.

Lee at Richmond, Virginia; Longstreet later praised its facilities as "excellent." Afterward, it served as a Union army post until 1865.
Today, Camp Hill is home to several businesses including Tyson Foods Inc., Kimberly-Clark Corporation (makers of Kleenex), and Regions Financial Corporation (the largest bank in Alabama).
