Mobile, Alabama is a city located in the southeastern corner of the state. The city has a population of just over half a million people and is home to several major corporations, including Ford Motor Company and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Mobile was founded in 1702 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, who named it for Mobile Bay, the largest natural harbor on the Gulf of Mexico. The city quickly became an important port for trade with Europe and the New World. In 1813, during the War of 1812, British forces captured Mobile and held it until they were forced to retreat in 1814.
The early years of Mobile's development were marked by rapid growth due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Mississippi River. This growth was helped by its position as a port town and by its status as capital of Alabama from 1817 to 1861. During this time period, Mobile became known as "the Paris of the South." However, after the American Civil War ended in 1865, Mobile's economy began to decline due to competition from other cities along the Gulf Coast such as New Orleans and Houston. This decline was reversed beginning in about 1970 when many large companies began moving their headquarters to Mobile due to its excellent transportation infrastructure and business climate. Today, Mobile is one of Alabama's most prosperous cities with a growing economy that is fueled by both traditional industries such as manufacturing and tourism as well as newer sectors such as information technology and biomedical research.
Real estate in Mobile is characterized by both its high prices relative to other parts of Alabama as well as its low vacancy rates. This has led to strong demand for housing throughout the city despite limited supply; according to Zillow data from January 2018, median rent prices are $1,090/month while median list prices are $269/month (both figures are adjusted for inflation). In addition, mobile homes are relatively rare in comparison with other parts of Alabama; according to Zillow data from January 2018 only 2%of properties in mobile were classified as "mobile homes." Despite these high prices and limited availability (especially downtown), there has been little evidence so far that price appreciation or gentrification has caused significant displacement or social unrest among long-time residents; indeed there have been few reports either positive or negative about real estate developments in recent years.
Overall then real estate in Mobile appears stable if not increasing rapidly compared with other parts of Alabama; however this may change given recent trends towards increased investment activity within urban areas across America
