Mount Vernon, AL

Mount Vernon is a small town located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County.

The town was founded in 1819 by General James Winchester and named for his home in Mount Vernon, Virginia. The town's early economy was based on agriculture and cotton production. In 1875, the railroad came to Mount Vernon and the town began to grow rapidly as a result. By 1900, it had a population of 2,000 and it had become an important commercial center for the surrounding area.

Today, Mount Vernon is still an important commercial center for the surrounding area. It has a variety of businesses including banks, restaurants, retail stores, and medical facilities. The main attraction in Mount Vernon is its historic district which contains many buildings from the early days of the town.
