Somerton, AZ

Somerton is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population of Somerton was 1,847 as of the 2010 census. Somerton is located on U.S. Route 60, about 10 miles east of Coolidge and 20 miles west of Globe.

The town was founded in 1887 by Charles H. Brown and named for his home town in England. The first post office opened in 1888 and the town grew slowly until World War II when it experienced a surge in population due to the military presence and the construction of numerous bases throughout the area. After the war, Somerton again experienced modest growth as families moved into newer homes built by returning servicemen and women. In recent years, however, Somerton has seen a more significant increase in population as retirees have moved into the community and young families have begun to settle there due to its close proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Phoenix and Tucson as well as its many recreational opportunities such as golfing, hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding and skiing at nearby Snowflake Mountain Resort
