The city of Apple Valley was founded in 1956 by George W. Appel and his wife, Jean Appel. The couple had purchased land in the area and began development on what would become known as "Appleton Ranch." The first home built on the ranch was a small cabin that served as a weekend getaway for Appel's family. In 1957, construction began on a larger home that would serve as the family's primary residence. The home was completed in 1958 and became known as "The Castle."

Over time, more homes were built on Apple Valley Ranch and it eventually became one of Southern California's most prestigious neighborhoods. Many celebrities and wealthy individuals have called Apple Valley their home over the years, including actors Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, singers Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond, business magnate Donald Trump, and athletes Magic Johnson and Shaquille O'Neal.
