Compton, CA

Compton, California is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 92,096. Compton is known as the "City of Compton" and "The Black Wall Street of the West." The city was named after its founder, James W. Compton.

In 1927, Compton was incorporated as a city with a population of 6,000 people. The first major industry in Compton was agriculture; however, by 1940 most businesses had moved to the city center to take advantage of its central location and transportation facilities. In 1945 Comptons population reached 25,000 and since then it has continued to grow steadily. In 1990 there were 50 Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Compton; however by 2000 this number had decreased to 27.

Today's economy is based largely on services and trade; however manufacturing still plays an important role in the local economy. Some notable companies headquartered in Compton include AEG (the world's largest private air-conditioning company), 3M (the world's largest manufacturer of adhesive products), and PepsiCo (the world's largest food company).

The City of Compton has made significant strides over the past few years in terms of infrastructure development and public safety initiatives aimed at improving quality of life for its residents. Recent projects include construction of a new police station and fire station as well as upgrades to streets and sidewalks throughout the city center. Additionally, new parks have been created including a recreation center that features an indoor pool and basketball courts as well as a baseball field/softball field complex that includes an outdoor amphitheater seating 2200 people
