Lake City is a city located in Placer County, California. The population was 14,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento metropolitan area.
Lake City was founded in 1868 by John Sutter and his wife Elizabeth McCarty. The town was named for Lake Tahoe, which can be seen from many of the town's streets and businesses. In 1871, Lake City became the county seat of Placer County when it was moved from Auburn.
The downtown district features several historic buildings, including the Old Courthouse (built in 1875), which is now used as a museum; and the Masonic Temple (built in 1888). A number of shops and restaurants line State Street, which runs through the heart of downtown. The city also has a park system with several recreational areas including an Olympic-sized pool and tennis courts as well as baseball fields, basketball courts, a skatepark, and a children's play area.
