Pacific Palisades, CA

Pacific Palisades is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 16,912 at the 2010 census. Pacific Palisades is known for its luxury real estate and its many affluent residents. The city has a Mediterranean feel with rolling hills and views of the Pacific Ocean. It is home to some of the most expensive real estate in the United States.

The history of Pacific Palisades can be traced back to 1887 when two brothers, Hiram and Jotham Judson, purchased 640 acres of land on the Palos Verdes Peninsula from Joseph Dominguez for $20 an acre. In 1906, Hiram Judson sold part of his land to Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., who designed Calabasas Park which now occupies much of what was once Judson's land. In 1911, Hiram Judson's son-in-law, Averell Harriman bought another part of his father-in-law's land and built a house there which he called "Palisades". Harriman named his home after the cliffs that overlooks the ocean in Palos Verdes Estates near London.

In 1927, Floyd Odlum built "Odlum House" on top of a hill overlooking Calabasas Valley which became known as "the most beautiful house in America". Odlum sold his home in 1969 for $10 million to oil tycoon Jock Whitney who renamed it "Whitney Oaks". In 1974, Michael Jackson purchased Whitney Oaks for $2 million and moved into it with his family until he died in 2009.

In 1954, David Geffen founded Geffen Records on Sunset Boulevard which became one of Hollywood's leading recording studios. Geffen also owns Universal Studios Hollywood which has been used by such artists as Michael Jackson, Barbra Streisand and Bruce Springsteen among others. Other notable businesses located in Pacific Palisades include Saks Fifth Avenue (which opened its first store there in 1989), Chiat Day (which opened its first store there in 1978), Ralph Lauren (whose flagship store opened there in 1988), Neiman Marcus (which opened its first store there in 1990), Hermès (whose flagship store opened there in 1984) and Lululemon Athletica (whose flagship store opened there in 2007).

The city has many upscale restaurants including Wolfgang Puck's Spago restaurant which was awarded three Michelin stars and two Zagat awards; Jean Georges' Le Cirque restaurant; Nobu; Ruth’s Chris Steak House; Canlis; Chateau Marmont; Bouchon Bakery & Café; FIG Restaurant + Lounge at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Beverly Hills; Masa sushi bar at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Beverly Hills ; Umami Burger at One Santa Monica Place ; Craftsteak at The Beverly Hilton Hotel ; Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar at InterContinental Los Angeles Century City ; BLT Fish & Chips at Catch LA by Joe’s Crab Shack . There are also several cafes including Starbucks Coffee Company , Peet’s Coffee & Tea , Caffe Nero , Panera Bread Company , TCHO Chocolate .

It should be noted that not all businesses located within Pacific Palisades are exclusive to this affluent community - some examples include Subway sandwich shops , 7 Eleven convenience stores , Target department stores , Macy’s department stores , Kohls department stores . However given that much luxury real estate is situated within this small city it is no surprise that these establishments are more commonly found here than elsewhere within Los Angeles County .
