The area that now comprises Reseda was originally part of a large ranch owned by John Sutter. In 1887, George W. Hewitt built a dairy farm on what would become known as Hewitt Avenue (now Sepulveda Boulevard). In 1906, he built his first residential subdivision called Hewitt Gardens on land he had purchased from Sutter. Hewitt Gardens was an early example of planned suburban development in Los Angeles County. The community became known as "The Garden City" because of its wide streets lined with palm trees and other vegetation.

In 1917, Ralston Purina opened its first plant in Southern California here in Reseda near what is now the intersection of Roscoe Boulevard and Vanowen Street (adjacent to today's Ralston Purina plant). During World War II, Reseda served as a military base for training pilots for combat missions over Europe due to its close proximity to Santa Monica Airport (now Santa Monica Municipal Airport).

In 1948, developer Averell Harriman developed Harriman Estates which included homesites for sale along Moorpark Road (then Ventura Boulevard) between Sherman Way (today's Roscoe Boulevard)and Mulholland Drive/ Highland Avenue/ Lincoln Way West (the present-day boundary between Sherman Way/Roscoe Boulevard on one side and Highland Avenue/ Lincoln Way West on the other). This area became well known for its large estates built by Hollywood celebrities such as Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall and Joan Crawford among others who resided there during their time in Los Angeles or when they were filming movies in nearby areas such as Tarzana or Northridge. In 1957-1958 developer Harry Chandler developed Chandler Ranch which consisted of 1-, 2-, 3- & 4-unit single family homesites situated along Ventura Boulevard between Moorpark Road/Sherman Way on one side and Highland Avenue/ Lincoln Way West on the other adjacent to Harriman Estates which continued until 1990 when it was annexed into Reseda proper following annexation proceedings initiated by then Mayor Tom Bradley who cited increased traffic congestion due to growth within Chandler Ranch resulting from increased housing developments therein over time coupled with limited public services available therein such as schools or shopping opportunities thereby necessitating municipal government intervention thereto pursuant to state law . Today much of Chandler Ranch remains undeveloped with only scattered pockets of houses here & there but nevertheless provides an interesting glimpse into how this once exclusive enclave looked like back then .
