San Anselmo is a small town located in Marin County, California. The population was 11,928 at the 2010 census. It is located about 30 miles north of San Francisco and 20 miles south of San Rafael.

The town's history can be traced back to 1857 when Samuel Brannan established a trading post on the banks of the San Anselmo River. In 1868, James Ralston purchased the post and developed it into a prosperous agricultural community. The arrival of the railroad in 1875 led to increased development and growth in San Anselmo. By 1900, there were 1,000 residents living in town.

During World War II, San Anselmo was one of several towns in Marin County that were targeted by Japanese bombers due to its strategic location near major shipping routes. There were no casualties from the attacks, but damage to buildings and infrastructure was extensive. The town's recovery from the war was helped by the establishment of a military base in nearby Sausalito in 1945 and by the influx of veterans who started new businesses and families in San Anselmo.

Today, San Anselmo is a thriving small town with many historic buildings and attractions that make it a popular tourist destination. Some notable places include Stinson Beach State Park (home to some of California's best surfing), Tamalpais State Park (with its dramatic views of Mount Tamalpais), Point Reyes National Seashore (a popular spot for hiking, camping, fishing, birdwatching), and downtown San Anselmo which features boutiques, restaurants, art galleries and more.
