West Sacramento is a city located in Sacramento County, California. The population was 116,916 at the 2010 census. West Sacramento is part of the Sacramento metropolitan area.
The city was founded in 1868 and named after General William S. West, a hero of the Mexican-American War. The first post office opened in 1869. The city grew rapidly as a result of its location on the Central Pacific Railroad line and as a result became an important commercial center for Northern California. In 1886, West Sacramento became the county seat of Sacramento County when it replaced Natomas.
Today, West Sacramento is an important regional center for business and commerce with a diverse economy that includes both traditional businesses and new technology-based enterprises. The city's major industries include agriculture (particularly dairy), manufacturing, information technology services, health care services, and tourism/ recreation. Major employers in the city include Wells Fargo Bank (the largest bank headquartered outside of San Francisco), Kaiser Permanente (the largest healthcare provider headquartered outside of San Francisco), Sierra Pacific Industries (a leading lumber company), American River College (one of two community colleges in California), and Mercy Medical Center (one of two hospitals serving Northern California).
West Sacramento has experienced steady growth over the past several decades due to its strong economy and excellent infrastructure including numerous shopping centers, restaurants, parks, libraries and schools. The city has made significant progress in improving its public safety facilities including construction of a new police department headquarters building which was completed in 2006; expansion and renovation of existing police facilities; construction of a new fire station; installation of digital radio systems throughout both fire departments; upgrading or construction of many streetlights; reconstruction or replacement of many sidewalks; installation or upgrade to water mains; installation or upgrade to sewer lines; improvement or constructionof storm drains ;and more recently addition o f bike lanes , pedestrian walkways ,and traffic calming measures .
In recent years ,the City has also made efforts to improve its image by undertaking projects such as beautification projects along major streetscapes ;establishment o f an Economic Development Department which provides assistance to businesses seeking to locate within the City limits ;development o f an aggressive marketing campaign aimed at attracting new businesses ;and establishment o f partnerships with other local governments such as Sac Metro Transit Districts , Sacramento Regional Airport Authority , Sacramento Kings Basketball Club ,and others .
