Bailey is a small town located in Jefferson County, Colorado. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Bailey is located on U.S. Highway 40 about 10 miles east of Steamboat Springs and about 20 miles west of Leadville.

The town was founded in 1879 by J.D. Bailey and named for his son, Bailey Jr., who later became the first postmaster of the town. The first business in Bailey was a blacksmith shop operated by J.D.'s brother-in-law, A.J. Hinkle, who also served as the town's first mayor and postmaster (1879-1881). In 1884, J D Bailey built the first hotel in Bailey - The Mountain House - which still stands today as a historic landmark and popular tourist destination
