The town of Hudson was founded in 1876 when the railroad was extended to that point. The town's name is derived from the Hudson River, which flows through the community. Early settlers included miners and farmers who raised cattle and crops. In 1882, a post office was established and by 1886 there were enough people living in Hudson to form a school district. In 1889, the first bank opened in Hudson and by 1898 it had two newspapers - The Herald and The Republican.
In 1902, a fire destroyed much of downtown Hudson but within two years new businesses had replaced those lost in the blaze. By 1910 there were twenty-four businesses operating in downtown Hudson including three banks, four grocery stores, two hardware stores, two lumberyards and a hotel/restaurant called The Crystal Palace which served as both an entertainment venue and meeting place for local civic organizations.
During World War II many residents worked at defense plants such as Douglas Aircraft Company or Rockwell International Corporation located near Denver or Boulder. After World War II many veterans returned home to find that their farms had been sold to developers who built new homes on what had once been rural land. Today much of Hudson remains agriculturally based with dairy farms dotting the landscape while newer developments include commercial properties such as restaurants or medical offices.
The economy of Hudson has traditionally been based on agriculture (dairy farming), retail (general store/grocery store), manufacturing (defense-related companies), services (medical offices) and tourism (the nearby ski resorts). However since 2000 there has been an increase in jobs in information technology which has led to an increase in housing prices and population growth within the town limits
