Barkhamsted is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 10,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New HavenMilford metropolitan area.

The town was first settled in 1714 by Ebenezer Barkhamsted and his family from East Hampton, Long Island. They purchased of land from the Pequot Indians for 60 pounds sterling. Ebenezer built a gristmill on the site which still stands today as Mill Brook Park. The Barkhamsted area was originally known as "Barkstead." The name was changed to Barkhamsted in 1892 after Ebeneezer's grandson, George Barker-Mills (1854-1929), donated land for a new public school and park.
