Durham, CT

Durham is a town in Windham County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 8,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Windham County.

The town was first settled in 1798 by Ebenezer Durham and his family. Durham was a captain in the American Revolution and served as Governor of Connecticut from 1795 to 1797. He named the town after Durham, North Carolina. The town's early economy was based on agriculture and manufacturing; however, it has since developed into a center for health care and higher education.

Durham is home to Sacred Heart University (SHU), one of the largest Catholic universities in America with over 12,000 students. SHU also has an extensive research program in many areas such as cardiology, oncology and neuroscience which has led to many medical breakthroughs that have benefited society as a whole including new treatments for cancer and heart disease. In addition to SHU, Durham is home to Trinity College which was founded in 1839 by the Congregationalist Church as one of the first colleges west of the Hudson River catering exclusively to students from New England who were preparing for careers in ministry or teaching. Today Trinity College offers undergraduate degrees as well as graduate degrees through its School of Divinity which ranks among the top theological schools in America. Other major employers include Stony Brook University which has an enrollment of over 20,000 students and employs over 4500 faculty members; Johnson & Johnson which operates two corporate campuses located within Durham; GE Healthcare which has its global headquarters located within Durham; and SAS Institute Inc., a leading provider of business intelligence solutions headquartered just outside downtown Durham near I-84 Exit 16A/B on Route 9 South
