The town was first settled in 1764 by Ebenezer and Jonathan Trumbull on land given to them by General George Washington. The town was incorporated in 1853 from parts of Granby and Simsbury.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 2.27%, is water. West Granby borders Simsbury to the north, Granby to the east, Farmington to the south, and Avon to the west.
