Richmond Hill is a suburban city located in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 38,868. The city is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The history of Richmond Hill can be traced back to 1827 when General James Edward Oglethorpe founded the town on land donated by the Cherokee Nation. The town was originally called Savannah West after Oglethorpe's home in England. In 1845, the name was changed to Richmond after Richmond Castle in England. The first post office opened in 1847 under the name Savannah West but was renamed Richmond Hill in 1850.

Richmond Hill began to grow rapidly after World War II when many families moved into the city to take advantage of its many amenities and job opportunities.
