Union City began as a railroad town in 1892 when the Atlanta and West Point Railroad built a line through town to connect with its main line at West Point. The town grew rapidly as a result of its location on the railroad and because it had access to abundant water resources from nearby Lake Lanier and Lake Allatoona. By 1910, Union City had a population of 2,000 and boasted several businesses including a flour mill, cotton gin, bank, drugstore, hardware store and two churches: First Presbyterian Church (1892) and Grace Methodist Episcopal Church (1898).
The growth of Union City slowed after World War II but rebounded in the late 1990s due to new development near Interstate 285 which provided access to larger markets outside Atlanta. Today, Union City is home to several large businesses including an insurance company headquarters; medical offices; law firms; financial institutions; restaurants; retail stores; hotels; an amusement park; and a movie theater complex which features three theaters with digital projection systems capable of showing 3D films.
The city has also seen significant residential development in recent years due to its proximity to I-285 as well as other major metropolitan areas such as Athens and Augusta which offer excellent job opportunities as well as quality living environments.
