Kinderhook, IL

Kinderhook is a small town located in Mc Henry County, Illinois. The population was 2,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Crystal Lake- Kinderhook- Elmhurst, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The town of Kinderhook was founded in 1837 by John and Catherine (Catherine) Kinzie. The Kinzie family had migrated from Scotland to America and settled in Chicago. John Kinzie decided to purchase 640 acres of land in what is now Kinderhook and build a new home for himself and his family. He named the settlement after his birthplace, Kinderhook, Scotland.

The first buildings were constructed on the outskirts of the village and it wasn't until 1845 that the first settlers moved into their homes. The town quickly grew as people came to work on the many farms that surrounded it. By 1850 there were already enough people living in Kinderhook to form a government with a mayor, four trustees, and two constables.

In 1853 John Kinzie donated 160 acres of land for use as a public school district which became known as District No 1 School District. In 1865 Kinderhook incorporated as a village with a population of 800 residents.

Today there are several businesses located in Kinderhook including restaurants, convenience stores, banks, hardware stores, car dealerships and more! There are also several churches located within the town including Saint Mary's Catholic Church (established in 1863), First Presbyterian Church (established in 1875), Trinity Lutheran Church (established in 1886), United Methodist Church (established in 1905) and more!
