Lexington, IL

Lexington, Illinois is a small town located in the heart of Illinois. The population of Lexington was 10,827 as of the 2010 census. Lexington is located in Sangamon County and has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s.

The first settlers in Lexington were farmers who arrived in 1818. The town quickly grew and by 1836 had a population of 1,000. In 1839, the town was incorporated and by 1850 it had a population of 3,000. The growth of Lexington was due to its location on the National Road which connected Springfield with St. Louis. This important transportation route helped make Lexington an important commercial center for central Illinois.

Today, Lexington is still an important commercial center for central Illinois with a strong agricultural economy based on crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat and cattle farming. However, the town has also developed into a bedroom community for people working in nearby cities such as Springfield and Champaign- Urbana. There are also many businesses located in downtown Lexington that provide services to residents and tourists alike including restaurants, boutiques and galleries.
