Mossville, IL

Mossville is a small town located in southern Illinois. The population of Mossville was just over 2,000 as of the 2010 census. Mossville is located in Livingston County and is bordered by the towns of Livingston to the north, Carbondale to the east, and Murphysboro to the south.

The history of Mossville can be traced back to 1806 when General James Wilkinson established a military post on what is now known as Wilkinson Prairie. The post was later renamed after General James Moss who served in the American Revolution. In 1821, Colonel John McClernand established a trading post near Wilkinson Prairie and named it McClernand's Post after his commander in chief. In 1827, McClernand sold McClernand's Post to Captain Jesse Bledsoe who renamed it Bledsoe's Post after himself. In 1840, Bledsoe sold Bledsoe's Post to Colonel William Gentry who renamed it Gentry's Post after himself. Gentry's Post remained an important stop on the Underground Railroad until it was burned down by Union troops in 1862 during the Civil War.

In 1865, Colonel John Sappington purchased Gentry's Post and renamed it Sappington's Station after himself. Sappington operated Sappington's Station until 1889 when he sold it to Jeptha Henson who operated Henson & Sons Mercantile Store until 1912 when he sold it to Wm Dickson who operated Dickson Hardware Store until 1916 when he sold it to C C Whitehead who operated Whitehead Grocery Store until 1922 when he retired and closed down his store. In 1924, Rufus Pritchard purchased Whitehead Grocery Store and changed its name to Pritchard Grocery & Meat Market which remains open today as one of Mossville's most popular businesses.

In 1929, Rufus Pritchard purchased 160 acres adjacent to his grocery store which he used as a farmstead for raising livestock and cropsuntil his death in 1964 at which time his son took over operation of the farmstead which continues today under different ownership but with the same name-Pritchard Farms Incorporated..

Today, Mossville is home to several small businesses including Pritchard Farms Incorporated (a cattle ranch), Jeptha Henson Mercantile (a general store), Dickson Hardware (a hardware store), Whitehead Grocery (a grocery store), and McClendon Ford (a car dealership). There are also two churches-First Baptist Church of Mossville and Living Word Apostolic Church-and several schools including Livingston County High School, Carbondale Middle School East Campus, Murphysboro Elementary School South Campus ,and Southern Illinois University EdwardsVILLE Campus .
