Rock Rapids is a city located in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 17,890 at the 2010 census. Rock Rapids is the county seat of Johnson County and home to the University of Iowa Hawkeye football team.

The city was founded in 1856 and named for a nearby rock formation called Rocky Ridge. The first settlers arrived that year and built homes along the banks of the Missouri River. Rock Rapids quickly became an important trade center for goods heading westward across the plains.
