West Point, IA

West Point is a small town located in Johnson County, Iowa. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County.

The town was founded in 1854 and named for General Winfield Scott's headquarters during the Mexican-American War. The first settler in West Point was James Hogg. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, which made it an important transportation hub for the area. Today, West Point is still an important transportation center due to its location on Interstate 80 and U.S. Route 61.

The economy of West Point is based largely on agriculture and tourism. The town has several restaurants and hotels that cater to tourists who come to visit the nearby attractions such as Fort Des Moines, Mount Oread State Park, and Lewis & Clark Caverns National Monument.
