Windsor Heights, IA

Windsor Heights is a small town located in Johnson County, Iowa. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Windsor Heights is known for its beautiful homes and gardens, as well as its close proximity to Des Moines.

The history of Windsor Heights can be traced back to 1856 when the first settler, James H. Wilkinson, arrived in the area. Wilkinson built a cabin on what is now known as Wilkinson Avenue and started farming the land. In 1868, another settler by the name of John A. McClure arrived and began farming the land that would become known as McClure Acres. McClure was one of the first settlers to plant orchards in Johnson County and his orchards are still present today.

In 1886, Jens Christian Andersen built a home on what is now Andersen Court and started a dairy farm which eventually became Windsor Heights Dairy Products Incorporated. The dairy farm was one of the first businesses in Windsor Heights and it remained operational until 1984 when it was sold to Dean Foods Incorporated.

Windsor Heights continued to grow slowly until World War II when military personnel stationed at nearby Fort Des Moines began moving into the town due to its close proximity to downtown Des Moines. This influx of people led to an increase in housing developments and commercial businesses throughout Windsor Heights during this time period.

Today, Windsor Heights remains a small town with a rich history that is still being enjoyed by its residents today
