Alma, KS

Alma is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, located about halfway between Wichita and Topeka. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Alma is home to the Alma Public Library and the Alma Cemetery.

The first settlers in what would become Alma arrived in 1854. The town was named for Alma Lathrop, one of the original owners of the land on which it sits. A post office was established in Alma in 1857, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1957.

The economy of Alma is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is known for its apple orchards, which are operated by several different families. There are also several wineries located nearby that produce wine made from local grapes. Tourism is also a major source of income for the town; visitors can enjoy hiking trails and scenic drives throughout the area.

Real estate in Alma is primarily residential; there are few commercial properties available for sale or lease. The median price of a home sold in Alma during 2017 was $130,000.
