Barnes is a small town located in the southeast corner of Johnson County, Kansas. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. Barnes was founded in 1873 and named for Judge Barnes, one of the original settlers.

The town's economy is based on agriculture and retail sales. The major crops are corn, soybeans, wheat and hay. There are also dairy farms and poultry operations in the area. Retail sales include groceries, hardware stores, gas stations and restaurants.
