Barnes, KS

Barnes is a small town located in the southeast corner of Johnson County, Kansas. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. Barnes was founded in 1873 and named for Judge Barnes, one of the original settlers.

The town's economy is based on agriculture and retail sales. The major crops are corn, soybeans, wheat and hay. There are also dairy farms and poultry operations in the area. Retail sales include groceries, hardware stores, gas stations and restaurants.

Barnes has two schools - Barnes Elementary School (grades K-6) and Barnes Junior/Senior High School (grades 7-12). There is also a Christian school called Crossroads Academy which serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

The main transportation routes in Barnes are U.S Highway 71 and Kansas Highway 10. Interstate 35 passes just to the north of town but there is no access to it from Barnes itself. The nearest airport is Wichita Mid-Continent Airport which is about 25 miles away
