The town was founded in 1879 and named for Elsmore C. Johnson, a railroad official. The first business in Elsmore was a general store operated by A.M. and Lizzie Moore. In 1887 the Moore family built the first hotel in Elsmore, which was also the first building erected in the town. The hotel burned down in 1895 and was replaced by the current structure, which is still open today as a bed and breakfast operation.
