Elsmore, KS

Elsmore is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, located about 20 miles south of Wichita. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census.

The town was founded in 1879 and named for Elsmore C. Johnson, a railroad official. The first business in Elsmore was a general store operated by A.M. and Lizzie Moore. In 1887 the Moore family built the first hotel in Elsmore, which was also the first building erected in the town. The hotel burned down in 1895 and was replaced by the current structure, which is still open today as a bed and breakfast operation.

Elsmore is primarily an agricultural community with some light industrial development nearby. The primary economic activity is agriculture with crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa being grown on large farms throughout the area. There are also several poultry operations within Elsmore township as well as several dairy farms that produce milk products for local consumption or sale to processors outside of Kansas City metropolitan area..
