Hiawatha, KS

Hiawatha is a small town located in Johnson County, Kansas. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Hiawatha is known for its historic downtown district and its many antique stores. The town's economy is based largely on the retail sales of antiques and other collectibles.

The first settlers arrived in Hiawatha in 1868. The town was named after Chief Hiawatha of the Ojibwe Nation who lived in present-day Wisconsin. In 1884, a post office was established in Hiawatha and it has since been operational continuously.

The downtown district of Hiawatha is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features many buildings that are over 100 years old. Some of these buildings include the Johnson County Courthouse, the Masonic Temple, and the First Presbyterian Church. The downtown district is also home to several antique stores, including Brown & Williamson Antiques, Kinsley's Antiques & Collectibles, and J&R Country Store & Gallery.

Hiawatha is located near several attractions that tourists can visit while in town, including Fort Scott State Park, Shawnee Mission National Historic Site, and Osage Hills Wildlife Preserve. There are also several restaurants located within walking distance of the downtown district.
