Mound City, KS

Mound City is a small town located in Wyandotte County, Kansas. The population was 2,876 at the 2010 census. Mound City is home to the Wyandotte County Courthouse and the Mound City Museum.

Mound City was founded in 1872 by settlers from Lawrence, Kansas. The town was named for a mound of earth that was found on the site of the town. The first business in Mound City was a general store operated by J.D. Browning and C.W. Hiller. In 1874, J.D Browning built the first hotel in Mound City, which is now known as the Browning Hotel Museum.

The early economy of Mound City depended heavily on agriculture and livestock farming; however, during World War II, defense industries began to move into Wyandotte County and Mound City experienced significant growth as a result. Today, Mound City continues to be an agricultural community with many farms located in and around the town; however, there has been a recent trend of businesses moving into downtown Mound City due to its proximity to I-35 and other major highways.

Real estate in MoundCity is primarily made up of single family homes; however there are also some apartments and condos available for purchase or lease within the city limits.
