South Hutchinson, KS

South Hutchinson is a small town located in Hutchinson County, Kansas. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. South Hutchinson is home to the Hutchinson County Fairgrounds and the South Hutchinson Community Center.

The town of South Hutchinson was founded in 1887 by Dr. J.W. Hutchison and his wife, Amanda. The Hutchisons were early settlers in what would become Hutchinson County and played an important role in its development as a center for agriculture and commerce. Dr. Hutchison established a general store and post office in South Hutchinson, which served as the community's primary business center until the 1930s when it was replaced by a larger grocery store operated by Jeraldine Klinefelter. Today, Klinefelter's remains one of the few businesses still operating out of South Hutchinson's original commercial district.

South Hutchinson is located on U.S.-81 approximately midway between Wichita and Topeka, making it an ideal location for businesses and residents seeking easy access to both metropolitan areas. The town is also close to several agricultural producers including wheat farms, cattle ranches, apple orchards, cornfields, soybean fields, and cotton plantations; this diversity of agricultural production has helped make South Hutchinson one of Kansas' leading agricultural communities.
