The town was founded in 1819 by James and Nancy ( Powell) Madison. The town was named for James Madison, fourth President of the United States. The first post office opened in 1820 and was called Powell's Station. In 1821, the name was changed to Madisonville after James and Nancy Madison donated land for a courthouse and jail.
