Aberdeen, MD

Aberdeen is a town in Harford County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baltimore– Washington Metropolitan Area.

The town was founded in 1799 by General James Robertson and named for his home town of Aberdeen, Scotland. Aberdeen is located on the Susquehanna River at its confluence with the Potomac River and is adjacent to Havre de Grace to the south and Bel Air to the north.

The earliest settlers were farmers who grew tobacco, wheat and corn on large plantations along both banks of the river. In 1814, Aberdeen became a port when it became an important shipping point for goods arriving from Baltimore via the Chesapeake Bay Canal. The canal was completed in 1829 and greatly increased trade through Aberdeen's port facilities.

Aberdeen's growth as a commercial center was further stimulated by its location near major railroad lines connecting Baltimore with Washington D.C., Philadelphia and New York City. These railroads made it possible for businesses in Aberdeen to reach a much wider market than they could have ever done before.

During World War II, Aberdeen was one of several towns in Maryland that served as headquarters for military operations surrounding Washington D.C.. This activity resulted in significant damage to many buildings in downtown Aberdeen, but fortunately no lives were lost during this time period.

In recent years, Aberdeen has experienced significant growth due to its proximity to Baltimore (just minutes away by car) as well as its excellent schools and quality of life amenities such as parks and lakeshores
