The city's history dates back to 1755 when James Cross purchased land along the Monocacy River from Frederick Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore. The town was officially founded in 1871 by George W. Brown and named for his father-in-law John Eager Brown, a U.S Senator from Maryland who had championed railroad development in the state. Gaithersburg grew rapidly as a result of its proximity to Washington D.C., which made it an ideal location for federal employees and contractors working on construction projects related to the nation's capital. The opening of the National Airport in 1951 further stimulated growth in Gaithersburg as businesses catering to air travelers began to open up around the airport area.
