Rockville, MD

Rockville is a city located in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 107,098. The city is the most populous municipality in Montgomery County and one of the most populous cities in Maryland. Rockville was founded in 1751 as a small settlement on the Potomac River by George Washington and James Smith. It became an incorporated town in 1854 and grew rapidly during the mid-19th century due to its proximity to Washington D.C., which made it a desirable place to live for government officials and members of the military. In 1871, Rockville became one of the first municipalities in Maryland to provide public education for all children within its borders.

Today, Rockville remains an important center of commerce and culture in Montgomery County. The city's economy is based largely on its position as a major transportation hub; it is home to several major highways and commercial centers, including downtown Rockville and Gaithersburg. Several major companies have their headquarters or major operations here, including Lockheed Martin Corporation (the world's largest defense contractor), Booz Allen Hamilton (a leading consulting firm), MedStar Health (one of America's largest healthcare providers), SRA International (a global technology company), and Jabil Circuit (one of America's largest electronic component manufacturers).

The city has also been home to several notable institutions of higher education; among them are American University (AU), Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Georgetown University Law Center, National Catholic School for Girls (NCSG) – all three located within walking distance from downtown Rockville – as well as Saint John's College in Annapolis Junction.
