The city is the most populous municipality in Montgomery County and one of the most populous cities in Maryland. Rockville was founded in 1751 as a small settlement on the Potomac River by George Washington and James Smith. It became an incorporated town in 1854 and grew rapidly during the mid-19th century due to its proximity to Washington D.C., which made it a desirable place to live for government officials and members of the military. In 1871, Rockville became one of the first municipalities in Maryland to provide public education for all children within its borders.
